7 packing musts when travelling with children

Anybody who has travelled with children knows it’s a tough call. There’s always something missing, something broken, something overlooked. Plus, they get bored at the click of a finger. While you can’t be prepared for any and every thing, this list will help you put together some stuff to make your trip more comfortable.

  1. 1.    Medicine kit: I’m not talking about vitamins and calcium drops here. Stock up on medication for nausea, altitude sickness, upset stomachs, cold and fever, cough lozenges, Dettol and band aids. Put in a few disposal bags and cotton, too. If your child is on regular medication for something, check with your doctor and put that in, too. For asthmatic children, one can’t leave house without the inhaler. Check and double check.
  2. 2.    Spare clothes: It’s a given that kids will get mud on their clothes, or spill ketchup, or God forbid, even mustard. Instead of desperately trying to get it all cleaned and dry, just carry enough spare clothes to last you through the trip. And do carry seasonal clothes. For the hills, don’t forget to pack enough woolens, while for the beach, swimwear goes in first.
  3. 3.    Wipes and hand sanitizers: If you want to keep those bugs away, hygiene has to be top of the list. Use hand wipes liberally, and when you feel something is about to make their way to the kid’s mouth, a squirt of hand sanitizer will at least prevent some germs.
  4. 4.    Devices: When we were young, our parents handed us some coloring books and crayons, and we’d happily doodle all day long.
The current lot of kids gets bored faster, and devices filled with apps and games are the only way to keep them in one place at the airport or in the train. Don’t forget the chargers.
  5. 5.    Family games: A family holiday is about spending quality time as a family. Pack in a deck of playing cards (like UNO) or Scrabble or Monopoly, and dedicate some time each day to play together. It’s a great way to bond.
